For some they revel in the opportunity to meet new people and network and for others just thinking of attending a networking event can be daunting. For me, I lean towards being more introverted, I have always preferred doing smaller intimate meetings to network, being able to learn about a person and what their passion is. However working in this industry that relies heavily on networking and referrals to build a clientele base, I understand the importance of attending larger networking events to get your name out there and meet new professionals.
Although, to this day I still get nervous prior to attending larger events, there is just something about big crowds that I have always found daunting. However, I know that unless I put myself out there and get out of my comfort zone, that I won't move forward. The biggest incentive for me is that you never know where a great opportunity could come from, just by simply attending one of these events, a new referral, a new friend or a mentor could appear. You don't have to do it all the time if you are not comfortable with it but you will surprised what could come of it, if you do just take the chance. For me, looking back now during my time at University, I definitely neglected to take up the opportunities to network, which is something I wish I took more advantage of.
So for those students or young lawyers out there, reach out, attend events, get out and about, meet new people there is so much on offer and up for grabs, all it takes is that first step.
